The Reviews are In

This is the book I will be pressing into the hands of everyone I know this year.My book club has been looking for a cozy mystery series to replace the one we just finished and I am arriving to next month's meeting with ten copies of this and a very strong recommendation. The discussion questions practically write themselves — inheritance and identity and what we owe to history, alongside a genuinely gripping mystery and some of the most satisfying slow-burn romance I have read in years. K.D. Brinegar writes with warmth, humor, and real emotional intelligence. This is the start of something very special. I am already pre-ordering Book 2.

Everything a debut novel should be and then some. The voice is completely assured from page one — you never feel the author finding their footing, which is rare in a first novel. Moira's narration is sharp and specific and genuinely funny without ever being smug, and the supporting cast is rich enough that I could see every single person in the village clearly. Isla is a particular delight — the gossipy best friend who turns out to be genuinely indispensable. The mystery structure is satisfying and fair, which I always appreciate. Everything you need to solve it is there if you're paying attention. I was not paying enough attention. I will be next time.

"Give Him Back His Name — and Give Me More Books" - I finished this at 2am and immediately went back to re-read the first chapter because I wasn't ready to leave Killrannoch. The cold case at the heart of Book 3 — a Victorian servant named Alexander McRae, erased from the official record by people who had the power to do exactly that — is the most emotionally resonant mystery K.D. Brinegar has written yet. Moira's archival detective work, following the gaps in old ledgers the way she follows the shape of a missing object, is riveting. The line "the thing that was removed leaves the shape of itself behind" stopped me cold. This series just keeps getting better.

– Patricia Hollingsworth, ARC Reader - Book 2 : Kilts & Cold Cases

I started reading cozy mysteries for the light entertainment. I did not expect to be this emotionally invested in a man who died in 1896. That is entirely K.D. Brinegar's fault and I mean that as the highest compliment. The prose in Kilts & Cold Cases is sharp and specific and occasionally beautiful — the kind of writing where you slow down not because you're confused but because you don't want to rush past it. The mystery is clever, the setting is gorgeous, and Moira Sinclair is exactly the kind of heroine this genre needs more of. Highly recommend the whole series.

– Catherine D. - ARC Reader - Book 2 : Kilts & Cold Cases

Moira Sinclair is my new favorite fictional person. She's smart without being a genius detective who solves everything instantly. She's funny without being a walking one-liner machine. She makes mistakes and gets scared and keeps going anyway, and she approaches the whole situation with the specific energy of a woman who has decided to simply get on with it. I loved her from the first page. The mystery is great, the setting is gorgeous, and the romantic subplot is handled with exactly the restraint it needs — no declarations, no melodrama, just two people who are clearly right for each other slowly figuring it out. This is exactly what cozy mystery should feel like.

– Amanda K. - ARC Reader (Chicago, IL) - Book 1 : Highlands & Homicide

Most cozy mysteries live and die by their amateur sleuth, and Moira Sinclair is simply one of the best in the genre right now. She's methodical, dry, occasionally hilarious, and genuinely moving when the case gets to her. In Book 3, she's tasked with restoring the name and reputation of a man who was deliberately wiped from history over a century ago, and the weight of that mission gives the whole book a moral seriousness that I didn't expect. The Ewan subplot also finally goes somewhere. I may have said "about time" out loud.
